Mitchell Tournament, A Weekend of Firsts
The
St Marys Mites competed in the Mitchell Tournament this weekend and had a
weekend of firsts.
Natalie Johnston pitched her first complete game of the year picking up a 6 – 3 win against Tavistock. Ava Ansley crushed her first, and the team’s first home run going deep to centre field. Catcher Grace Hillman threw out an attempted steal on third firing a strike to Rebecca Sleeper who placed the perfect tag for the team’s first throw out. On Saturday, the Mites experienced their first rain delay (and their second, and their third ….) of the season. Sarah Lynch picked up her first complete game win against Fullarton, albeit in the team’s first rain shortened game. The Mites for the first time had to give back three runs after leading 5 – 1 against Fullarton but due to the rain shortened game, lost the three runs from the top half of their inning as the game was called. St Marys also experienced being in first place with a 2 – 0 record unfortunately, they also experienced their first tournament cancellation of the year and could not collect their first championship. Picking up RBI’s for the weekend were, Ansley (3), Johnston (2), Lynch (2), Karissa Waghorn, Sleeper, Jillian Sterkenburg, and Hillman all with one each.
