Mites Dig Deep
In Huron/Perth Fastball action, the St Marys Mite Girls hosted the #1 squad from Mitchell, Wednesday at Teddy’s Field.  Pitching for the Mites was Ava Ansley who faced a hungry Mitchell offence in the top of the first.

Mitchell sent eight batters to the plate bringing home five of them as the hometown Mites fell behind 5 – 0.  In the bottom of the inning, Angelina Vanderwal opened with a single, followed by Erin Green who took one for the team being hit by a pitch.  Sarah Lynch then stepped up lining a double picking up two RBI’s making it 5 – 2.  A quick strikeout then brought Natalie Johnston who drove in Lynch on an RBI single closing the gap to 5 – 3.  Another strikeout followed, before Billie Sedly stepped into the box and drove a RBI single bringing Johnston home making it 5 – 4.  Ansley then picked up a single but couldn’t cash in Sedly as St Marys closed out the inning down 5 – 4.

In the second, Ansley dug in deep and despite giving up a base-on-ball and a hit batter, Ansley struck out three in the inning keeping the Mites in it.  Jillian Sterkenburg led off the bottom of second with a single and quickly stole second.  Vanderwal then picked up her second single of the game and also picked up an RBI as Sterkenburg came home to tie the game at 5 – 5.  That’s all the Mites could muster though as Vanderwal was left stranded as the next three batters all struck out.

To open the third, Kaitlyn deBoer took to the mound facing five batters.  deBoer surrendered a walk and gave up a double, but kept Mitchell off the scorecard striking out three preserving the 5 – 5 tie.  The offence came alive in the bottom of the inning as Johnston, deBoer, and Vanderwal, all picked up singles.  Ansley drilled a double, and Karissa Waghorn, Sterkenburg, Green and Lynch earned walks, as St Marys picked up five runs and opened up a 10 – 5 lead.

That was all the scoring of the game as deBoer shut the door on Mitchell in the bottom of the fourth giving up a couple of walks while striking out three as the Mites took the win 10 -5.  Next up, St Marys travels to Sebringville on Tuesday evening for a 6:45 start.
