Johnston Grand Slam Powers Mites
A washout and a win was had by the St Marys Mite Girls Fastball team this past week in Huron/Perth Fastball action.  On Monday evening, despite the obvious rain and thunderstorms, the Mites travelled most of the way to Shakespeare only to receive notification that their game was cancelled and all had to do the U-turn to head home.  On Wednesday, with beautiful sunny skies, the Mites hosted Sebringville at Teddy’s Field.

Taking the mound was Sarah Lynch who made quick work shutting out the visitors in the top of the first facing only four batters striking out three and giving up a walk.  In the home half of the inning, Angelina Vanderwal, Lynch and Rebecca Sleeper all drew walks to load the bases as Natalie Johnston stepped up and singled into right field bringing home Vanderwal for the Mites first run.  Karissa Waghorn followed with the fourth walk of the inning which brought Lynch home making it 2 – 0. Unfortunately, St Marys left the bases loaded as two strikeouts and a fielder’s choice force at home ended the inning.

In the second, Lynch only faced four batters again striking out two, giving up a single and then with the help of some great defense by shortstop Billie Sedly who made the stab while throwing over to first-base where Ava Ansley collected the out to maintain the 2 – 0 lead. In the bottom of the second, the Mites sent nine batters to the plate with five walks and three singles.  RBI’s went to Sleeper, Johnston, Waghorn, Ansley, and Kaitlyn deBoer as the Mites opened up a 7 – 0 lead but had to stop there as they reached their maximum five runs.  In the bottom of the inning, Ansley took to the mound and got a quick out with the assist of Sleeper at second who stole a sure single and fired over to deBoer at first to collect the first out.  That turned out to be the only out of the inning as Sebringville collected their five runs making it a 7 – 5 game.

In the third, after a lead off strikeout, Sedly was hit by a pitch, Grace Hillman and Vanderwal each drew walks to load the bases.  Lynch followed with another walk bringing home Sedly, Sleeper drew the fourth walk bringing home Hillman which set the stage for Johnston.  Johnston stepped in and crushed a grand-slam home run to centre field.  Unfortunately, only three runs counted as St Marys reached their five run maximum giving them a 12 – 5 lead.

In the top of third, Sebringville sent ten batters to the plate and scored another five runs but the Mites squeaked out a 12-10 win.

Next up, the Mites have two away games Tuesday, June 30 in Stratford and Thursday, July 2 in Fullarton.
