Two Road Wins and a Three Homerun Inning
In Huron/Perth Fastball action, the first place St Marys Mite Girls continued their dominance earning a pair of wins on the road this past week improving to 6 - 1.

On Tuesday, the Mites travelled to Stratford and opened up a 3 – 0 lead in the first on RBI’s from Grace Hillman, Sarah Lynch, and Erin Greene.  In the bottom of the inning, Natalie Johnston took to the mound and struck out three of the four batters she faced to maintain the 3 – 0 lead.

In the second inning both teams struck out the side, but Stratford was not as fortunate in third as St Marys sent nine batters to the plate collecting five additional runs making it 8 – 0.  Picking up RBI’s were Greene, Karissa Waghorn, Jillian Sterkenburg, and Grace Hillman who picked up two on a double down the first base line.  Johnston continued her strong performance shutting out Stratford in the bottom of the third.

St Marys added another two runs in the fourth with RBI’s from Johnston and Sterkenburg giving the Mites a 10 – 0 lead.  In the bottom of the fourth, making her first pitching performance of the season, Billie Sedly came on for the save on quickly struck out the first two batters.  Stratford then lined a single, but Sedly was not rattled and struck out the next batter on four pitches preserving the 10 – 0 win.

On Thursday the Mites travelled to Fullarton and promptly opened up a 5 – 0 lead in the top of first.  Picking up RBI’s were Greene, Johnston, Waghorn, Kaitlyn deBoer and Rylee Nethercott who along with Honor Gropp were called up for the game.  Lynch took the mound in the bottom of the first and struck out the first two batters.  She then gave up a walk and single, but scooped up a “comebacker” tossing to Johnston at first for the third out maintaining the 5 – 0 lead.

In the top of the second, the Mites exploded for their most offensive attack of the season.  After Sedly reached base on a walk and Hillman reached on a single, Angelina Vanderwal crushed a homerun to right field making it 8 – 0.  Lynch then stepped to the plate and smashed a solo homerun to centre field giving St Marys a 9 – 0 lead.  Up next was Greene who drew a walk bringing Johnston to the plate.  Johnston drilled the third homerun of the inning but unfortunately only one run would count as the Mites reached their five run maximum but still held a 10 – 0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Lynch struck out three but gave up three walks and two singles for two runs as St Marys maintained a 10 – 2 advantage.  The Mites bats were silenced in the top of third, while in the bottom of the inning deBoer came on in relief closing out the game for a 10 - 7 win.

St Marys next action is July 8 @ 6:30 as they host Exeter 1 at Teddy’s.
