Baden Too Much in Season Opener
The St Marys Norampac Squirt Fastball team opened their season on Tuesday taking on the Baden #2 squad at Teddy’s Field.  The Squirts have a good mix of veterans and rookies and are looking forward to successful season. Starting pitcher Chantel Johns made quick work of the first batter striking her out on four pitches.  Defense then took over as Natalie Johnston scooped up a hard grounder throwing over to first baseman Nicole Rock for the second out.  Baden’s third batter of the inner stepped in hitting a comebacker to Johns who picked it up and tossed to Rock for the third out.

In the home half of the inning, Johns opened with a single and quickly stole second then third while Taylor Hammell drew a walk. Tianna Glousher stepped in hitting a RBI single brining home Johns putting the home town team on the board.  Johnston then singled allowing Hammell to score making it 2 – 0 St Marys.  Grace Hillman followed with a solid single driving in Glousher and St Marys picked up its fourth run of the inning as Sarah Lynch drove one to the outfield cashing in Johnston.

Baden got on the board in the second as they roughed up Johns for five singles while drawing four base-on-balls earning the league maximum six runs in an inning to take a 6 – 4 lead.  St Marys failed to score in the bottom of the inning despite a single by Rock and walks to Kaitie Gratton and Hayden MacDonald.

Lynch came on to pitch in the third and quickly fell behind walking the first two batters she faced before striking out the third for the first out.  It looked as though the second out was going to follow as a slow roller was hit back to Lynch who tossed it to first for the apparent out, but it slipped out of the glove of the first baseman allowing the runner to be safe while a run scored. On the next play, an error on third missed another out and allowed Baden’s second run of the inning to come home.  Things spiraled from there as the visitors added four more runs taking a 12 – 4 lead.

St Marys had a single by Glousher and a walk by Hammell in the bottom of the third but were unable to produce a run.  In the fourth Johns returned to the mound looking for some redemption and got it, with a three-up three-down inning including two strike outs.

In the bottom of fourth, Johnston singled and came home on an RBI from Lynch making it 12 – 5.  Johnston then came on in relief to start the fifth but Baden added one more run on an infield throwing error making it a 13 – 5 ball game.  Ava Ansley singled and came home on Gratton’s RBI single in the bottom of the fifth, but St Marys fell 13 – 6 in their opener.

Next Action:  St Marys hosts the Baden #1 team on Tuesday, May 24 at Teddy’s.
