Junior Rookie House league Guidelines

The goals of Jr Rookie house league are:

  • To introduce the skills and rules of baseball

  • To experience playing a game with other peers

  • To have fun

Players are organized into four-five small teams. It is important to keep the numbers small so that all children have the opportunity to field the ball and all can bat quickly. 7 is an optimal number of players per team. Depending on number of teams, each team will play 1-2 nights per week - 2 teams per field.

Suggested Format for each night:

  1. Warm up game (tag, jog, follow-the leader stretches, etc) - 5 mins

  2. Skills and drills - consider setting up as stations (throwing and catching with a partner, hitting off the tee, grounders and pop flys) - 10 -15 mins

  3. Game (see suggested “rules” below) - 25-40 mins

Rules:

  1. Each player bats - all players must sit on bench while not batting or running the bases

  2. A parent pitches to players - all players receive 5 pitches - if ball not hit after 5, bring tee in for batter to hit off of - all players will hit - no walks

  3. As soon as ball is hit, runner runs to first. If an out is made at first, the runner is out and returns to the bench.

  4. Hitters should only advance one base at a time

  5. Encourage the fielders to focus on attempting to get the out at first. As season progresses and if players demonstrate readiness, begin to teach getting outs at second or third and tagging runners.

  6. Spread the fielders out evenly on field - don’t need to play set positions

Notes:

-times can be adjusted depending on the weather, and interest of players

-if lots of players not present, redistribute teams so that numbers are sufficient

-if lightning or thundering or excessive rain, stay home! - convenor will also help to make this call and adjust calendar on website

-if excessive heat, convenor can help to make this call or make it a water games night!

Jr Rookie is intended as an introduction to baseball. Keep it low key and make it fun every night!
