Busy Week
The St Marys Hawkins Cabinetry Mite Girls had a very busy week playing four games while winning three of them.  On Monday, they travelled to Anne Hathaway Park in Stratford and left town with a 7 – 5 victory.

Combining for the win were pitchers Chantel Johns and Lauren Gracey who combined for seven strike-outs.  Highlight of night was when catcher Anna Standeaven threw a strike to third baseman Julia Cameron in a steal attempt and picked off the runner.

On Wednesday, St Marys hosted Sebringville at Teddy’s Field.  After picking up seven hits and thirteen walks earlier in the week, the bats fell short and the base-on-balls were strikes thanks to some great visitor pitching.  Sebringville cruised to a lop-sided victory.

On Saturday as part of the St Marys Minor Ball Day, the Mites hosted both Mitchell squads at Teddy’s Field with a morning and evening game.  Just like the weather, the girls turned up the heat on took both games.  In the morning match-up pitchers Natellie Johnson, Johns, and Cameron combined for the victory but it wasn’t easy.  Down by five after the top of first, the Mites crept back with four of their own in the bottom of the inning.  After two, St Marys was down 6 – 9, but at the end of the third the hometown squad held slight 11 – 9 lead.  True to this see-saw affair, Mitchell hunkered down, and scored three in the top of the fourth to tie it up at 11 – 11.  In the bottom of the inning with the bases loaded, Sarah Lynch drove in the winning run with a solid single to give St Marys the  12 – 11 win.

In the evening game Avery Aarts, Johns, and Tianna Glousher combined for the victory.  The trio of pitchers received some great team offense as every St Marys player reached base during the game.  Despite being down 1 – 5 after the first inning, the Mites took a 6 - 5 lead after two and never looked back.  Highlight of the game came on the final out, or should I say two outs.  In the team’s first double play of the year, first baseman Elora Vanderwal caught a pop-up fly for the second out, and quickly tagged the errant runner on first for the third and final out.  What a heads-up play by the veteran.  Honourable mention also goes out to Shaylynn Ainslee who had two hits, was hit by a pitch, and had three RBI’s in the victory.

In the skills competition that took place, Vanderwal won the longest hit competition and Johns won the running-the-bases.  Well done everyone.  Next action for the Mites is Wednesday at 6:30 as St Marys hosts Tavistock at Teddy’s Field.
