Split For The Week
On Monday the Hawkins Cabinetry St Marys Mites travelled to Sebringville to take on the Sting, and started by putting a little sting into the Sebringville squad.  St Marys opened up a 5 – 0 lead in the top of the first inning on RBI’s by Julia Cameron, Sarah Lynch, Avery Aarts, Angelina Vanderwal and Kaitlyn Deboer.

In the bottom of the inning though, the Sting stung St Marys scoring five of their own to notch the game at 5 – 5.  After a St Marys strikeout to start the top of second, Elora Vanderwal singled and quickly stole second.  Tianna Glousher stepped to the plate and drilled a RBI triple to right field scoring Vanderwal.  Cameron followed with a RBI single bringing Glousher home.  Natalie Johnson followed drawing a base-on ball and quickly stole second while Cameron stole third.  Lynch then hit into a RBI fielder’s choice and was followed by Aarts who, with a solid RBI single brought in the Mites fourth run of the inning to give them a 9 – 5 lead.  Unfortunately, Sebringville stormed back in the bottom of the second scoring another five runs to take a slim 9 – 10 lead.  After a very long two innings, the Mites knew the third was going to be their last chance for offense.  Chances looked slim though as the first batter struck out, but Glousher and Cameron each had singles keeping the hopes alive.  Another Mite strike out followed bringing Lynch to the plate who had a RBI single to tie the game.  Aarts then stepped into the box and delivered her RBI single to take an 11 – 10 lead.  Shaylynn Ainslie was eager to add some insurance runs but unfortunately struck out to end the inning as the Mites would now look to their defense to preserve the lead.  However, Sebringville continued their scoring ways and picked up another four runs to secure an 11 – 14 win.

On Wednesday the Mites hosted Fullarton at Teddy’s Field and despite the cold July night, the Mites were “hot” pounding out twenty-one hits, including seven for extra bases and earning five base-on balls.  Every player reached base and every player crossed home plate in what proved to be their most productive and evenly distributed team effort thus far.  Despite being down 0 - 5 after the top of the first, the Hawkins Mites picked up five runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 5 – 5.  Pitcher Chantel Johns settled down in the second striking out three.  St Marys rallied for another four runs in the bottom of the second, five in the third, and five in the fourth to earn a 19 – 8 victory.  Leading the way for the Mites was Aarts who picked up five RBI’s, Glousher and Lynch picked up three apiece, Ainslie and Natalie Johnson each had two and Lauren Gracey, Anna Standeaven, Deboer and Cameron finished with one RBI apiece.

Next up, the Mites travel to Fullarton on July 21st for a 6:45 game.
