Juuuust A Little Short!
The Hawkins Cabinetry Mite Girls hosted Tavistock at Teddy’s Field on Wednesday.  In what looked to be the makings for a long night, St Marys surrendered five runs in the top of the first.  The Mites were looking for some retribution in the bottom of the inning, unfortunately the  lead-off hitters all struck out to close the inning down 0 – 5.

Tavistock added one more in the top of the second, then in the bottom of the inning, St Marys’ four and five hitters also struck out and the crowd was wondering if they were looking at a no-hitter in the making.  St Marys had other plans as Kaitlyn Deboer stepped up but was quickly down 0 – 2 in the count.  Deboer’s experience persevered and she worked it to a full count and eventually drew the walk.  Tavistock was still working on the no-hitter with Kaylee Fowler at the plate.  Fowler took a rip at her first pitch which through off the back catch who allowed the passed ball allowing Deboer to steal second and put herself in scoring position.  Fowler’s next pitch was what she was looking for as she drove a solid single down the first base line driving in Deboer breaking the no-hitter and giving St Marys a run.  Unfortunately, the excitement was short-lived as the next batter struck out to end the ending.

Pitcher Chantel Johns came in the top of third and despite surrendering three walks, she was able to strike out two, and an out at first held the score at 1 -6.  In the bottom of the inning, Johns’ drew a lead-off walk and scored on Avery Aarts double closing the game to 2 – 6.  Julia Cameron and Tianna Glousher drew walks as well and Aarts came home on an RBI single by Shaylynn Ainslie.  With the bases loaded, Anna Standeaven, Bailey Ashton, and Deboer all drew RBI walks and the inning ended in a 6 – 6 tie.  Tavistock would add two more runs in the top of fourth and it was up to the bottom of the order to get things going.  Fowler led off with a walk and Sarah Lynch came to the plate.  Fowler stole second on a wild pitch, and then stole third.  Lynch connected but was thrown out on a fielder choice while allowing Fowler to score bringing the game within one.  Johns struck out and Aarts stepped up to plate and blasted a triple.  Lauren Gracey took a walk as did Cameron to load the bases for Glousher.  St Marys fans could feel the excitement as Glousher connected lining one to the first-baseman who unfortunately, fielded the drive and quickly stepped on the bag to end the inning and the game with St Marys falling 7 – 8.

St Marys travelled to Shakespeare on Thursday evening but the scores were unavailable at the time of printing.  Next action for St Marys is June 18 at 6:30 as the host Lucan at Teddy’s Field.
