After Two Rainouts, Mites Finally Play
After two straight rainouts, the St Marys Hawkins Cabinetry Mites took to the diamond at Teddy’s Field as they hosted Shakespeare in Fastball action last week.  Taking the mound was Natalie Johnson who despite giving up a lead-off homerun and two walks, settled in nicely and struck out three in a row.

In the bottom of the first, Chantel Johns started things off with a walk and quickly stole second, then third but was stranded as St Marys closed out the inning down 1 – 0.  Shakespeare added a run in the top of the second to take a 2 – 0 lead but in the bottom of the inning, the Mites came alive.  With one out, Lauren Gracey drew a walk and stole second.  Anna Standeaven also took a base-on-ball, allowing her and Gracey to combine for a double steal to leave runners at second and third.  Kaylee Fowler picked up and RBI single as did Kaitlyn Deboer.  Shaylynn Ainslie followed with a triple picking up two RBI’s.  Johns then picked up her second walk of the game.  Sarah Lynch struck out bringing Avery Aarts to the plate who blasted a ball down the right field line for a triple.  Unfortunately, only one of the two runs were allowed to score as the Mites reached their five run maximum per inning as St Marys took a 5 – 2 lead.

Julia Cameron come on to pitch the top of the third and struck out the side to maintain the three run advantage.  Shakespeare also changed pitchers in the bottom of the third and not to be outdone, also struck out three to keep the game at 5 – 2.  In the top of the fourth, three walks and a hit batter contributed to a five run inning as Shakespeare took a 7 – 5 lead.  St Marys was scoreless in the bottom of the inning.  Top of fifth saw Shakespeare lead off with their second homerun of the night to give them a little cushion at 8 – 5.  In the bottom of the fifth, a promising inning unfolded as St Marys had the bases loaded with only one out.  Unfortunately, they were all left stranded as the game ended on two strikeouts.

Next action for the Mites is June 30th as they travel to Exeter.
