Busy Week Earns First Win!
It was a very busy week for the St Marys Norampac Squirt Girls Fastball team as they had three games in three days.  After a loss on Tuesday in Tavistock, followed by a loss in Shakespeare on Wednesday night, the Squirts travelled to Ingersoll on Thursday in a battle of the basement.  With both teams tied for last spot in the Huron/Perth Fastball League, the stage was set for some competitive ball.

In the top of the first, St Marys started the game off with two singles, which totaled their hit production for the two previous games. Unfortunately, Kaitie Gratton and Jillian Sterkenburg were stranded on base as they could not be cashed in.  In the bottom of the inning, Natalie Johnston took to the mound quickly striking out the first batter.  A walk, fielder’s choice, and single allowed two runs to score before Johnston struck out the next two as Ingersoll gained a 2 – 0 advantage.

St Marys picked up four runs in the second as Nicole Rock singled while Johnston and Kaitlyn DeBoer followed with walks to load the bases.  Angelina VanderWal, Gratton, Sterkenburg, and Ava Ansley all earned RBI’s as each drew a base-on-ball to walk in four runs and give St Marys the 4 – 2 lead.  In the bottom half of the second, Johnston struck out two while the defence picked up the third out on a four/three force to end the inning and preserving the 4 – 2 lead.

Squirt bats were swinging in the third as six St Marys batters connected.  Emma Luyten opened the inning with a single followed by RBI singles by Sarah Lynch, Johnston, and VanderWal.  DeBoer also had a single and Karissa Waghorn cashed in a run on a fielder’s choice.  St Marys opened up an 8 – 2 advantage as Johnston came on in the bottom of third.  With the bases loaded and one out, Johnston struck out two to end the inning while maintaining the six run lead.

In the fourth, after seeing how fun it was hitting in the third, the Squirts continued to swing at the ball picking up another five hits.  Ansley and Johnston each had singles.  DeBoer brought in a run on a fielder’s choice, and VanderWal had a RBI single.  The biggest hit of the inning came with the bases loaded as Rock drilled a base-clearing double as St Marys scored five runs in the inning making it a 13 – 2 game.  Hayden MacDonald came on in relief of Johnston in the bottom of the fourth facing eight Ingersoll batters.  MacDonald surrendered two runs while striking out three as St Marys earned their first win of the season catapulting them out of the basement and into seventh place in the Huron/Perth East Division.

Next up, the Squirts host the Tavistock 1 squad at Teddy’s Field on Tuesday, July 19 at 6:30 pm.  The squirts have one game to make up against the Tavistock 2 team prior to the year-end tournament August 5 – 7 in Stratford.
